  • Discussions about all aspects of vaccinations become heated in many locales at the start of autumn each year. Worthwhile? Necessary? Sensible? Effective? The right pathogens this year? There are many questions that concern researchers and manufacturers along with society and government. Look a bit further and you are quickly confronted with matters of efficiency, manufacturing costs, and access in developing countries for example, where vaccines are desperately needed but in some instances too expensive.

  • In her video interview for the Franco-German award in business (Deutsch-Französischen Wirtschaftspreis), German journalist Annette Gerlach describes the Franco-German collaboration as being like camembert on pumpernickel – the bringing together of characteristic ingredients from both countries to achieve a successful result. The partners – Fraunhofer FEP and MICROOLED – can likewise look upon this with pleasure at having nominated the Franco-German business award.

  • The EU-funded research project ‘LOMID’, led by the Fraunhofer FEP, has fabricated a new generation of microdisplays with 1-inch diagonal and WUXGA resolution (1920 x 1200 pixels) – requiring a pixel density of 2300 ppi. The project team has also shown, for the first time, that it is possible to bend such displays to radii of just 40 mm after thinning the substrate. Such thin, flexible displays save weight, but also allow novel optical designs to be used – especially important for accuracy when large fields of view are used in compact optical designs.

  • VR glasses are increasingly popular, but they have usually been heavy and oversized – until now. Large-area microdisplays are expected to change that, because they make it possible to produce ergonomic and lightweight VR glasses. The new OLED displays now reach very high frame rates and achieve extremely high resolutions with “extended full HD”.

  • The scientists of Fraunhofer FEP are pleased about two awards: the editors of DESIGN&ELEKTRONIK were searching for the “Innovator of the Year” for the first time. The readers of the magazine have chosen Fraunhofer FEP as the winner of even two categories for the research in the field of flexible glass and for the latest innovations regarding OLED microdisplays.

  • 21 | 2017 – Biodegradable electronics

    Dresden / October 11, 2017

Under the direction of the Fraunhofer Institute for Organic Electronics, Electron Beam and Plasma Technology FEP, an in-house Fraunhofer project for development of biodegradable electronics was begun last year. The Fraunhofer Institute for Electronic Nano Systems ENAS, the Fraunhofer Institute for Biomedical Engineering IBMT, the Fraunhofer Institute for Silicate Research ISC, and the Fraunhofer Resource Recycling and Strategy Project Group IWKS are working together on the project. The first results of the Fraunhofer FEP will be presented during Semicon Europe 2017 as part of productronica 2017 in Munich at the Silicon-Saxony joint booth in Hall B, Booth Nr. B1-416, November 14-17, 2017.

  • The bidirectional OLED microdisplays developed at Fraunhofer FEP were successfully integrated for the first time into a demonstrator of data glasses for representing augmented and virtual realties (AR and VR) as well as 2D and 3D content. The new data glasses will be debuted during awe europe in the Munich Ordercenter (MOC Veranstaltungscenter München) at the Fraunhofer FEP booth (No. 420) October 19 – 20, 2017.

  • Fraunhofer Institute for Organic Electronics, Electron Beam and Plasma Technology FEP, a provider of R&D in the field of organic electronics, will be presenting OLEDs on gauzy stainless steel foil during aimcal 2017 in Tampa/USA, from October 15 – 18, 2017. The novel application on display in Booth 22 was developed in cooperation with the Nippon Steel & Sumikin Materials Co., Ltd. (NSMAT) and Nippon Steel & Sumitomo Metal Corporation (NSSMC).
