Mechanical engineering

Optimized surfaces are the basis of many innovations, especially in mechanical engineering. Coatings that make products and components resistant to corrosion, wear and scratches are of enormous economic importance: damage caused by corrosion alone amounts to billions of euros worldwide every year. Friction-reducing coatings also make a considerable contribution to reducing energy and material consumption.

At Fraunhofer FEP, we develop highly productive vacuum processes and technologies to clean flat surfaces and components and improve their properties by applying a wide variety of coatings and coating systems: Using sputtering technology, plasma-activated high-rate vapour deposition and high-rate PECVD, we efficiently apply functional coatings. Together with the Fraunhofer Cleaning division, we can also offer you a comprehensive portfolio of cleaning technologies.

We use the electron beam as a versatile tool for welding components, hardening surfaces or specifically modifying their properties. Scaling up all processes for industrial production conditions is an important focus of our work.

Surface coating and modification

Corrosion protection and hard coatings:

  • Special anti-corrosion coatings and abrasion-resistant hard coatings for the automotive industry, particularly suitable for rivet elements in mixed constructions for the automotive and rail vehicle industries.

Thermal barrier coatings:

  • High-temperature-resistant coatings as heat protection for turbine blades to increase the service life and efficiency of turbines.

Solar control and UV protection films:

  • Coatings and films to reduce heat input and UV radiation in vehicle glazing, e.g. solar control films and blue mirrors for automotive applications.

Low-friction hard coatings:

  • Abrasion-resistant and low-friction coatings for engine components that increase efficiency and reduce wear on components.

Electron beam technology for material processing

Welding of transmission components and assemblies:

  • High-precision welding of transmission shift gears, turbocharger shafts and housing assemblies for high strength and reliability in demanding applications.

Surface hardening:

  • Electron beam hardening for components such as camshafts, transmission shift assemblies and paints to improve wear resistance and durability.

Plastic modification:

  • Optimization of the material properties of plastics by electron beam treatment for special applications in mechanical engineering and the automotive industry.
