Fraunhofer FEP offers applied and industry driven as well as customized R&D for innovative solutions in vacuum coating and surface treatment as well as organic electronics.

Therefore we use our core competences in electron beam and plasma technology for surface functionalization, treatment and modification e.g. for sterilization or biofunctional coatings.

We offer the development of new technologies for surface treatment and their transfer to systems suitable for industrial use. For this purpose, we develop, implement, and integrate key components tailored for industrial applications.

Bioleaching by stimulated microorganisms

A new process for enhanced microbial ore leaching (bioleaching) is under development at Fraunhofer FEP. Within the project “BioIntElekt”, funded by the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft (reference no. 601015) we have developed an innovative small-scale, low-energy electron beam source integrated in a bioreactor system. With the help of this, metals should be mobilized with the help of bacteria. We are currently working on a lab-scale technology for the direct integration of an electron beam source into a bioreactor for the treatment of liquids. Futhermore, we were able to run initial tests with an existing electron beam plant to proof the feasibility of the technology. First results show, that the interaction between electrons and bacteria can lead to stimulation.

Electron beam technology for the treatment of liquids on bioreactors

Electrons can be helpful in many industrial areas. At Fraunhofer FEP we have used our extensive experience to effectively treat even small quantities of liquids with electrons in compact systems. The initial idea was to gently inactivate viruses and bacteria for the production of inactivated vaccines. Examples of inactivated vaccines include ones against influenza and hepatitis A. Our inactivation technology with electrons eliminates the need to use toxic chemicals. This ensures fast, highly reproducible and effective vaccine production.
